Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about buying, selling, and renting vintage cameras with Film Folk.
Buying Cameras
We use a three-tier grading system: Excellent (near mint with minimal signs of use), Very Good (light signs of normal use with minor cosmetic marks), and Good (moderate signs of use but fully operational). Every listing includes detailed photos and an honest description of any imperfections.
Yes, every camera we sell comes with a 30-day functionality guarantee. If the camera doesn't work as described, we'll repair it, replace it, or offer a full refund. This covers mechanical and electronic function, not cosmetic condition.
We accept returns within 14 days of delivery if the camera is returned in the same condition it was sent. The 30-day functionality guarantee covers any issues with the camera not working as described. Please note that cosmetic issues noted in the original listing are not grounds for return.
We include all accessories mentioned in the listing. Many vintage cameras come with body caps and some original accessories, but this varies. The listing will clearly state what's included. We also sell accessories separately if you're looking for something specific.
We note any recent servicing in the listing. For cameras we've had professionally CLA'd (cleaned, lubricated, adjusted), we'll include documentation. If you need a camera serviced before purchase, we can arrange this for an additional fee.
We accept bank transfer, PayPal, and all major credit/debit cards. For high-value items, we may require bank transfer to avoid processing fees. Payment plans can be arranged for purchases over £500—just ask.
Selling Your Camera
Send us photos and details via our contact form or email. Include the camera model, condition description, any accessories, and close-up shots of any wear. We'll respond with a valuation within 2-3 business days. Valuations are free with no obligation to sell.
With outright purchase, we buy your camera immediately for an agreed price—quick and simple. With consignment, we sell it on your behalf and take a commission (typically 15-20%). Consignment often yields higher returns but takes longer. We'll advise which option suits your camera best.
It depends on the camera and market demand. Common models like the Canon AE-1 or Olympus OM-1 typically sell within 2-4 weeks. Rarer or more expensive items may take longer. We'll give you an estimate when we agree terms, and you can withdraw at any time.
Yes, we buy cameras in any condition, though the price reflects the repair costs needed. We have a network of skilled technicians and often restore cameras ourselves. Even non-working cameras can be valuable for parts or as restoration projects.
Rentals
We offer flexible rental periods: weekend (Friday-Monday), weekly, and monthly. For longer projects, we can arrange extended rentals at discounted rates. Let us know your needs and we'll find a solution.
We require a security deposit (typically 30-50% of the camera's value) which covers minor damage. For significant damage, we'll assess repair costs and deduct from the deposit. We strongly recommend rental insurance, which we can arrange for a small fee.
Absolutely! If you decide to buy a camera you've rented, we'll credit up to one week's rental fee toward the purchase price. It's a great way to try before you buy.
Film isn't included by default, but we offer starter packs with 2-3 rolls of quality film (your choice of colour or black & white) for an additional fee. We can also recommend local labs for developing.
Shipping & Delivery
Yes, we ship worldwide. International orders are sent via tracked, insured courier (typically DHL or FedEx). Shipping costs are calculated based on destination and package weight. Import duties and taxes are the buyer's responsibility.
Very carefully! Each camera is wrapped in acid-free tissue, cushioned with foam, and placed in a sturdy box. Lenses get extra protection. We've shipped thousands of cameras worldwide with an excellent safety record.
UK orders typically arrive within 2-3 business days. European orders take 3-5 business days, and international orders 5-10 business days. We dispatch within 1 business day of payment clearing.
Yes, all shipments are fully insured for the purchase value. In the rare event of damage or loss during transit, you're completely covered. We handle all claims directly with the courier.
General Questions
Every camera is thoroughly tested before listing. We check shutter speeds across the full range, meter accuracy, film advance, light seals, and overall mechanical condition. Any issues are noted in the listing. We shoot a test roll through premium cameras to verify everything works perfectly.
Yes, visits are welcome by appointment. We're based in the UK and happy to show you cameras, answer questions, and help you make the right choice. Please contact us to arrange a time—we're not a walk-in shop.
We work with a network of trusted technicians for servicing and repairs. While we don't offer this as a standalone service, we can arrange CLA (clean, lubricate, adjust) or repairs for cameras you've purchased from us, or as part of a sale. Ask us for details.
